The Steel Deck Institute is thrilled to announce Bob Hudson as its new president.
Bob Hudson’s journey in the steel deck industry began in 1998 when he joined Consolidated Systems, a South Carolina-based company known for manufacturing an extensive range of deck profiles. Initially serving as the Chief Information Officer (CIO), Hudson transitioned to the role of Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Over the years, Hudson’s involvement in the industry deepened, guided by his appreciation for the physical nature of construction and the irreplaceable role of human effort in the industry. Currently, Hudson is the General Manager of New Millennium’s Memphis division.
“My passion is fueled by the fact that we are involved with construction on projects that strengthen our nation and economy,” says Bob. “Our work is transformative – schools, airports, hospitals, etc. The construction industry depends on people and relationships. You can’t automate what we do.”
Expanding reach, deepening relationships
Hudson steps into his new role ready to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Michael Martignetti. Under Martingetti’s leadership, the institute began investing significantly in marketing and research, allocating over 50% of its budget to these areas.
“We are in a very competitive landscape. We compete against wood and concrete. We cannot afford to be content with just being an information resource depository for steel deck. We have to increase our market share. And when you increase market share, you must be intentional about reaching out to engineers and designers.”
Hudson aims to continue this trajectory and will put special emphasis on the need for SDI to actively recruit engineers and designers to expand its market share, recognizing the importance of intentional outreach and engagement to promote steel deck as a preferred construction material.
Addressing challenges and embracing growth
With SDI’s membership doubling over the past decade, Hudson says now’s the time to push for increased involvement, particularly from younger members, to sustain the industry’s growth. Hudson will also optimize SDI’s committee structure according to management principles that stress the significance of appropriate placement and participation.
Hudson is committed to incorporating technology to enhance engagement, such as using virtual meeting tools to increase attendance and participation.
Focus on sustainability and collaboration
Sustainability will be a focus area for Hudson. He believes that SDI must stay at the forefront of environmental and sustainability issues, working closely with federal, state, and local organizations to promote eco-friendly practices.
Expanding market reach and enhancing constructability
Hudson plans to expand the market for steel deck by highlighting its constructability advantages and architectural potential. With a special focus on steel deck’s superior versatility and speed of construction, his vision includes educating architects and engineers about these benefits to increase steel deck’s adoption in regions where wood and concrete currently dominate.
Bob Hudson’s extensive experience and clear vision position him well to lead The Steel Deck Institute. As Hudson steps into his role as President, the industry can look forward to continued advancements and an expanded market presence for steel deck.
